RUAG, renowned for its highly experienced and skilled NDT team operating in both Service and Engineering, is at the forefront of innovation in the field. In collaboration with RUAG, we are proud to introduce SafeSpect NDT+, a groundbreaking AR NDT Field of View solution.
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is a critical component in industries ranging from aerospace to manufacturing. The importance of precise and efficient NDT cannot be overstated, as it ensures the safety, reliability, and longevity of essential components and structures. However, the traditional methods of NDT face several challenges, particularly when the work needs to be done away from the workbench. RUAG’s AR NDT field of view project aims to address these challenges and revolutionize the inspection process.
Current Challenges in NDT
- Non-Workbench Scenarios: Inspectors often work in difficult environments, where setting up a workbench is impractical. These scenarios can include inspecting aircraft, large machinery, or structures where accessibility is limited.
- Hands Occupied: Traditional NDT methods often require inspectors to hold and operate various testing devices, leaving their hands occupied. This can be cumbersome, especially when working in tight or awkward spaces.
- Focus Switching: Inspectors must frequently shift their focus between the testing device, the object being inspected, and their notes. This constant switching can lead to cognitive strain and potential errors.
- Reports Not Digitalized: Manual reporting is still prevalent in many NDT processes. This not only consumes valuable time but also increases the risk of transcription errors and delays in data analysis.
Proposed Solution: SafeSpect NDT+
With our partner RUAG, we developed an innovative solution that leverages Augmented Reality (AR) to enhance the NDT process by projecting the display from testing devices directly into the tester’s field of view.
The primary objective is to project real-time data from testing devices onto AR glasses, allowing inspectors to focus on the test zone while keeping their hands free. This innovation aims to improve working conditions, reduce cognitive strain, and increase productivity.
The ultimate goal is to enhance system availability for customers, such as the Swiss Air Force, and to offer the solution to third-party customers within and outside the MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) market.
Benefits
- More Flexibility: With AR integration, inspectors can move more freely and perform inspections in various environments without the constraints of traditional equipment setups.
- Hands-Free Operation: AR glasses allow inspectors to keep their hands free, improving ergonomics and reducing fatigue, especially during long inspections or when working overhead.
- Measurements in the Field of View: Inspectors can view real-time measurements and data directly in their field of view, minimizing focus switching and cognitive strain.
- Immediate Digital Reporting: Reports are digitalized instantly, eliminating the need for manual transcription, and significantly speeding up the data analysis process. Photos and Videos can be recorded and uploaded to the back end and are available immediately for review.

Key Features of RUAG’s AR NDT field of view solution
Interaction Capabilities
- Eye Tracking: Enables inspectors to navigate interfaces and select options using eye movements, ensuring seamless interaction with the AR system.
- Gestures: Gestures allow inspectors to control the AR display, capture images, and perform other tasks without physical contact.
- Voice Commands: Voice recognition technology lets inspectors issue commands and dictate notes, enhancing hands-free operation.
Capture Measurements and Report
- Picture and Video: The AR system can capture high-resolution images and videos of the inspection area, providing visual documentation.
- NDT Data: Data from NDT devices, such as eddy current and ultrasound readings, can be captured, and added to the report as a video.
Platform Agnostic
We developed SafeSpect NDT+ with compatibility in mind. The solution can be integrated with the most common NDT hardware already in use by clients, without the need for extensive modifications to existing systems.
Diverse Use Cases
The solution can be used in various industries such as Maintenance, Aerospace, Oil and Gas, Pharma, Biotech, Energy, Transportation, and Defense, making it an ideal tool for NDT professionals in different inspection scenarios.
The solution was promoted at the 20th World Conference on Non-Destructive Testing (WCNDT)
RUAG presented SafeSpect NDT+ at the 20th WCNDT in Korea from May 27-31, 2024. This event brings together leading NDT experts, industry professionals, and OEMs to share ideas, promote new technologies, and network with specialists worldwide.
