Commissioning of a Raman microscope with help of Inspect AR

The setup of the Raman microscope at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW nanoLab) requires careful training so that the procedure can be performed error-free, safely and quickly. Precise laser parameters can only be achieved with a correctly set up and calibrated microscope. However, the large number of users means a considerable support effort for FHNW employees and pose a risk of high maintenance costs for the sensitive instruments.

The use of Inspect AR with a Microsoft HoloLens 2 enables the complex start-up procedure to be carried out safely and efficiently. The user has all information in the field of view while the hands remain free. The digital instructions with images, videos and virtual navigation through augmented reality enable error-free startup. If a problem does occur during the process, defects can be recorded directly via photo. All events are immediately documented in our web overview – in real time.

The supervision effort of all students added up to several days per semester for one class. With Inspect AR, this time is now greatly reduced because the students can learn and perform the process on their own.
